The Early Life of Saint Anthony of Padua
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 as Fernando Martins de Bulhões, Saint Anthony came from a wealthy and noble family. He joined the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine at a young age, devoting himself to prayer and study. However, inspired by the martyrdom of five Franciscan missionaries in Morocco, he left his order to join the Franciscan Friars Minor, taking the name Anthony in honor of Saint Anthony the Great.
His journey soon took him to Italy, where his destiny unfolded in unexpected ways.
A Powerful Preacher and Defender of the Faith
Though initially assigned humble tasks, Saint Anthony’s brilliance became evident when he was asked to preach at an ordination. His profound knowledge of Scripture and passionate oratory stunned even the most learned friars. From that moment, he became one of the most sought-after preachers of his time, known for drawing massive crowds and converting even the most hardened hearts.
He was appointed a Professor of Theology by Saint Francis of Assisi himself—an honor rarely bestowed—and went on to combat heresies with clarity and love.
The Miracles of Saint Anthony
Revered as the Wonder-Worker, Saint Anthony’s life was filled with countless miracles. He is famously invoked for finding lost items, a devotion rooted in a story where a treasured psalter was returned to him after prayer. Other miracles include:
- Speaking to crowds in multiple languages (a miraculous gift of tongues)
- Preaching to fish when people refused to listen
- Healing the sick and the crippled
- Restoring the foot of a young man who had cut it off in despair
These events, many documented by eyewitnesses, led to his canonization by Pope Gregory IX in 1232, just one year after his death—one of the quickest canonizations in Church history.
Why Saint Anthony Remains So Beloved Today
Saint Anthony is more than a miracle-worker—he is a symbol of hope, humility, and God’s active presence in our lives. He is the patron saint of the poor, of travelers, of married couples, and especially of those seeking lost things or lost hope.
His feast day on June 13th is celebrated worldwide, often with processions, bread blessings, and prayers for his powerful intercession.
